Yesterday I was helping my daughter with her homework. She was working on a presentation for one of her classes and was stuck on how to write a conclusion. The presentation was about her. It included things about her family, hobbies she enjoyed, and her interests.
When she got to the end, she needed to summarize the presentation. She felt like she was just repeating what she already said. I explained to her that the point of a conclusion is to do just that. You are basically summarizing the information for the reader into one neat little paragraph of 3-5 sentences.
She looked at me for a moment and told me that doesn’t make any sense. My response? Don’t overcomplicate it. It really is that simple.
Truth is, she gets this from me. I tend to overthink and in turn overcomplicate a lot of things too. But isn’t this the case for most of us? Especially when it comes to figuring out how to lose some unwanted pounds?
And all of that is BS. It’s misguided thinking perpetuated by insta-famous fitness gurus.
The truth of the matter is that nutrition and fitness are VERY simple.
Let me show you.
START WITH THE BASICS (because they work)
Start with protein.
Add some veggies.
Drink some water.
Throw in a smidge of carb/fat.
And the final step? Be mindful of portion size. Check out this plate template from Precision Nutrition that I use with all of my clients.
Remember this is just a starting point. For the love of everything holy, do not complicate this template. Use your favorite sources of protein, veggies, carbs, and fats. Don’t fall into the “this isn’t healthy” trap. If you like it, eat it within these portion suggestions.
I can almost guarantee that just doing this with all of your meals for a few weeks will lead to positive results.
SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS
We thrive in an environment that supports our goals. In the beginning, it’s necessary to remove the things that may cause us to stumble.
Take a moment to go through your kitchen...
Now that the troublemakers are gone, what’s left? If nothing, then we have some work to do.
Go to your nearest grocery store and stock up on healthy choices that will help you meet the plate template above. Purchase your favorite proteins, veggies, carbs, and fats to fill your kitchen with healthy options.
Taking the time to make sure your favorite healthy choices are easily accessible makes it easier to reach your goals.
You’ve all heard the saying, “Fail to plan, plan to fail,” from Benjamin Franklin.
Well, he’s right.
Think about all the things we prepare for in life in order to be successful...school, our job, starting a business, doing our taxes...you know, so we don’t get audited...having children, etc.
Success takes effort and the effort comes in planning.
CONSISTENCY OVER PERFECTION
You know me and my eff perfection mantra, so it’s probably not a surprise that I mention it here.
When it comes to fat loss, being perfect brings failure. Guaranteed.
Why? Because we can never be perfect 100% of the time. Unless you’re a robot.
So instead of trying to be perfect, do this instead:
I am a wife, mom, grandma & former professional “diet and exercise hopper" who understands the challenges of being 40lb overweight after having children & the damage repeated sense of failure can cause to your confidence and self-esteem.
